About NarrowTheList

NarrowTheList helps people compare places to live based on the things that actually matter to them.

Choosing where to live is rarely about one number. Housing costs may look attractive, but job opportunities may be limited. A city may have excellent outdoor recreation but higher home prices. Another area may offer larger yards, stronger schools or better access to healthcare, but fewer entertainment options or a longer drive to the mountains.

NarrowTheList brings those factors together so you can compare locations more thoughtfully and narrow a large list of possibilities into a smaller group worth exploring further.

How NarrowTheList Works

You begin by selecting broad priorities such as housing value, climate, jobs, recreation, schools, taxes, transportation and lifestyle. NarrowTheList compares those preferences with structured location data and identifies areas that may fit.

You can then refine your priorities, compare up to three locations side by side and explore detailed profiles for individual metro areas and cities.

The goal is not to tell you where you should live. It is to help you understand the strengths, trade-offs and practical differences between locations so you can make a better-informed decision.

No Place Is a Perfect Match

A high match score does not mean a location will satisfy every preference, and a low score in one category does not mean that feature is unavailable.

For example, a lower Horse Property score may mean suitable properties are less common or may require searching farther from the urban core. A lower Mountain Access score does not necessarily mean there are no mountains within driving distance. NarrowTheList scores are designed to show relative strength, availability and convenience rather than simple yes-or-no answers.

For that reason, NarrowTheList also highlights potential trade-offs. A location that is weaker in one area may still be an excellent overall fit if its advantages strongly outweigh the compromises that matter less to you.

Looking Beyond City Limits

Where you live is influenced by more than what sits inside the city boundary.

NarrowTheList also considers meaningful nearby access where appropriate. A metro area may benefit from nearby mountains, lakes, beaches, state parks, hiking areas, equestrian trails, recreation destinations or other places that can materially affect day-to-day lifestyle and weekend opportunities.

This helps provide a more realistic picture of what living in an area can offer.

Current Conditions and Future Outlook

Location profiles combine current reported data with NarrowTheList comparison scores and longer-term trend information where credible data is available.

Growing areas may offer expanding employment and economic opportunities while also experiencing rising home prices, rents, traffic or development pressure. Slower-growing or declining areas may present different trade-offs, including lower housing costs or potential real estate opportunities.

NarrowTheList does not assume that growth is always good or decline is always bad. The goal is to present the information clearly so you can decide what fits your priorities.

Personal Preferences Stay Personal

Some criteria, such as political environment or access to places of worship, are highly personal. NarrowTheList does not treat one political viewpoint, religion or lifestyle preference as better than another.

These factors are used in personalized matching only when a visitor chooses to consider them. Otherwise, they do not influence the experience.

Data, Sources and Methodology

NarrowTheList uses public data, identified third-party sources and standardized comparison methods to organize information about U.S. locations.

Data periods vary by source, and NarrowTheList scores are comparative ratings created to make complex information easier to evaluate. They are not ratings issued by government agencies or the underlying data providers.

We believe location data should be understandable and transparent. Additional information about individual data sources, scoring methods and terminology is available on our Sources & Methodology and Glossary pages.

Narrow the List, Then Explore

NarrowTheList is designed to help you move from hundreds of possible locations to a manageable shortlist.

Once you identify areas that interest you, explore the detailed location profiles, compare the trade-offs and, whenever possible, spend time in the area before making a major move.

The best location is not necessarily the one with the highest score. It is the one whose advantages matter most to you and whose compromises you are comfortable living with.
